PRESERVING OUR EUREKA MOMENT
Member for Ballarat Catherine King today announced that funding of $96,000 from Round 5 of the Australian Heritage Grants program will support a new conservation management plan for the Eureka Stockade Gardens.
This new plan will ensure that the many people who visit the gardens to learn about one of the most important moments in Australian history, can continue to do so while surrounded by natural beauty.
The Eureka Stockade Gardens, which are listed on Australia’s National Heritage List,
commemorate the Eureka Stockade—one of Australia's defining historical moments.
The park is extensive and has many outstanding features including a musical playground, barbecue and picnic facilities, sweeping green lawns, and a scenic lake and walking track.
While the exact location of the Eureka Stockade on Dec 3, 1854, is disputed, the beautiful gardens are also home to the Eureka Centre where the iconic Eureka Flag can be viewed.
This funding is part of the $5.57 million Round 5 of the Australian Heritage Grants program to protect, restore and manage Australia’s National Heritage listed places. In total, the Australian Government is investing more than $25 million through the Australian Heritage Grants program.
There are 120 places of outstanding natural, Indigenous or historic value on the National Heritage List, spanning every state and territory, from remote landscapes and ecosystems to the historic centres of our biggest cities. These grants will help to ensure our precious heritage-listed places will be protected for the future.

Quotes attributable to Ballarat Mayor Cr Des Hudson:
“We are extremely grateful to the Federal Government for this funding. It is timely that this project will update the 2001 plan with a new Conservation Management Plan that will align with the aims and objectives of the 2020 Eureka Interpretation Plan and the 2030 Vision for the Eureka Centre.
The Eureka Stockade Gardens is a significant and extremely important site for Ballarat. It is a place to remember those who lost their lives at the Eureka Stockade and reflect on the legacy that lives on 168 years later.”
