SURVIVOR REDRESS SCHEME NOT DELIVERING
A joint parliamentary committee has highlighted the deficiencies in the National Redress Scheme.
Institutions dragging their feet and limits on maximum compensation are making it too difficult for survivors to access redress.
I regularly hear from survivors who are struggling to access the scheme and are left without justice and the redress that they deserve.
Every failure in this scheme is a betrayal of survivors and carries the risk of creating new traumas.
The Royal Commission gave clear recommendations about how the redress scheme should operate, and the failure to follow these recommendations closely has undermined the potential benefits of the scheme.
Out of 60,000 eligible survivors, 3,300 applications to the scheme have so far been made.
Of these, there have only been 115 redress payments.
A Shorten Labor Government will work with the states and territories to improve the scheme.
